Library Winter Olympics to be Held in Larchmont

During the school holiday in February, lots of events are planned for children of varied ages at the Larchmont Public Library. In fact, it’s not necessary to be in Vancouver to get in the Olympic spirit! On Tuesday, February 16, the Library is sponsoring Library Winter Olympics. Events are planned for ages 2 to 4 at 10 am, for ages 5 to 7 at 11 am, and for ages 8 to 11 at 3 pm. For more information or to sign up, phone the Larchmont Library at 834-2281.

Ages 7 to 10 who read Dave Pilkey’s Captain Underpants books will want to sign up for the Captain Underpants Party on Wednesday, February 17, at 3:30 pm. Games and fun are planned.

Lovers of Jane O’Connor’s Fancy Nancy books will enjoy the Fancy Nancy soiree (that’s fancy for “party”). Children ages 4 and up are encouraged to dress up in their fanciest clothes and prance on over to the Library to hear stories, make a plume and join in a fashion show. Sign up for either the 2 pm session or the 3 pm session.

Rhythm and Rhyme for toddlers is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays or Fridays at 10 am. Sessions of Rhythm and Rhyme for babies ages 3 months to 1½ years are offered on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 10:45 am. Sign up is limited to Larchmont Library card holders. Sign up for the March Rhythm and Rhyme series will begin on Tuesday, February 16.

Stories and Tales, a story time for ages 2½ to 4, is offered twice a week -- on Tuesdays, February 2, 9, 16, and 23 at 2:15 pm, and Thursdays, February 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 10:30 am. There is no sign up for this program. Just drop in.

On Thursdays in February Alan Abrams, the Chess Guy, will be back at the Library to teach chess to children from age 6 to 18 on Thursdays, February 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 3:45 pm. Due to the popularity of this program, it is now limited to Larchmont Library card holders only, phone the library to register.

Those who are learning chess will enjoy the Face-off Fridays for those who would like to find a partner to practice playing chess on February 5, 12 and 26 from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Chess board will be provided but this is not an instructional session and there is no sign up.

On Wednesday, February 10, children aged 4 to 6 will enjoy Valentine Love Bug Story/Craft from 3:30 to 4:15 pm. Children must be registered for this program as they will enjoy stories of love in celebration of Valentine’s Day, and create their own love bug to give as a gift or keep for themselves.

The Guilty Conscience Book Discussion for adults is meeting on Thursday, February 4, at 7 pm. Rabbit Run by John Updike is the subject of this month’s discussion. Copies of the book are available for participants at the Library and new members are always welcome. The next meeting of the group will be on Thursday, March 4, at 7 pm.

In February the Oresman Gallery is featuring “Cityscapes/Innerscapes II,’ a photography exhibition by Walter Kimmel, and “unblinded” which includes drawings, mixed media and Sharpie pen drawings on metal and paper by Jessica Wasieleski. The Gallery is open during regular Library hours.

For up-to-date information, the Library’s web page (www.larchmontlibrary.org) has the most current listing of programs for adults and children. Phone the Larchmont Library at 834-2281 for more information.

The Library will be closed for Presidents’ Day on Monday, February 15. The Larchmont Library hours are: Monday and Thursday from 9 am to 9 pm; Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 am to 6 pm; Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm; and Sunday noon to 5 pm.
