Furniture Sharehouse Drive Will Benefit Needy Families
Furniture Sharehouse, which provides gently-used free furniture to families moving out of homeless shelters, escaping domestic violence, or recovering from natural or personal disasters, will be collecting furniture from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Mamaroneck High School on March 19.The school’s Furniture Sharehouse club is sponsoring the drive.
Kate Bialo, director of Furniture Sharehouse, says the need for sofas, armchairs, dressers, tables, chairs and clean mattresses and box springs is particularly acute after the long winter. “Furniture leaves our warehouse as quickly as it comes in,” she says. “We help as many people as we can – but there is always room for more.”
Bialo urges residents to review the guidelines at www.furnituresharehouse.org on what can be donated and what cannot be accepted prior to loading their car or wagon. Furniture Sharehouse does not accept ripped or stained items, king size beds, sleeper sofas, office and outdoor furniture, or oversized or heavy items. They are also not accepting any baby items due to safety concerns. Donors will be given a receipt itemizing their donations for tax purposes.
“Furniture drives are a great way for us to collect a large quantity of furniture while saving on expensive trucking pick-up costs,” Bialo says. If you can’t drop your items on March 19th, pick-ups are available for a minimum of three large items, and donors are also encouraged to drop off items at the warehouse at the Westchester County Airport (see website for details).
Since it began operations in 2007, Furniture Sharehouse has provided more than 8,800 items to almost 800 families in Westchester, helping them settle into a new home with dignity.
To volunteer or to ask questions about what might be accepted, call 914-834-1294 or email info@furnituresharehouse.org.
Furniture Sharehouse was established by the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound (www.jlwos.org). The JLWOS supports Furniture Sharehouse as a community project with generous funding and member volunteers to help Furniture Sharehouse fulfill its goal of providing free basic home furnishings to those in need.
