MARCH 2011

New Exhibit Showcases Senior Artists

For 38 years now, professional artist Patricia Miner-Sutherland has been sharing her love of art while teaching Larchmont and Mamaroneck seniors.

She has been recently getting them ready to exhibit their works for a March show in the Oresman Gallery at the Larchmont Library, 121 Larchmont Avenue. On Saturday, March 5th from 2:00-4:30 p.m. they will hold an artists’ reception.

“It seems that all the snow storms were on Wednesday, the day we hold our art class,” said Miner-Sutherland. “At this point the class is quite big. There are about 23 people enrolled.”

The new exhibit will feature numerous works from the students who attend the art class, open to all members of the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Senior Center. “Each member of the class has a unique style. I tell them that the only talent needed is patience,” noted Miner-Sutherland.

“I have met some fantastic people from my classes. In many cases these students are like members of my family.”

In the senior art class, where students are usually 60 and older, the aspiring artists are taught to work with watercolors, pastels, acrylic paint and water based oils. Some students become so engrossed in their work that they have set up home based studios.

“We will be hanging the paintings on Tuesday, March 1st,” said the Larchmont artist, as she explained that a lot of hard work goes into the process. The show will run for the entire month.

“As to the other permanent exhibition in the Mamaroneck Town Center on 720 W. Boston Road, there are two talented painters from my class that are having their one man show that will last two months.

“Irene Wielgus has beautiful flowers on exhibit. She has been painting for quite some time starting out with Alton Toby and then coming to my class.
Her paintings are done glazing transparent layer upon layer of color which make her paintings almost ethereal. In this exhibit she chose only flowers.

“Terry Price has the other panel. She also studied with Alton Toby and came to my class about 4 years ago. Her paintings are abstract and with great bravado. Her colors are very harmonious and pleasing to the eye,” Miner-Sutherland revealed.

“There have been a number of people writing and telephoning with great comments praising the work of the artists who so far have shown their work in this public space provided by Town Supervisor Valerie Moore O’Keeffe.”

As an accomplished and skilled artist, Miner-Sutherland has exhibited her paintings all over the world including numerous solo shows at local galleries. “The wonderful and sometimes painful experience of the creative process is what has held me enthralled for many years!”
