Sound Shore Medical Center
Benefits from JLWOS Support

Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC) continues to benefit from the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound’s (JLWOS)commitment to a three-year Health Initiative Project aimed at supporting the critical healthcare services SSMC provides to the Sound Shore community.

The Project was announced last year and since then, the JLWOS members have identified ways in which their resources can promote key health issues and help with improvement initiatives. In addition to supporting ongoing SSMC projects, fundraising and awareness efforts, the JLWOS Health Initiative Project Committee wanted to highlight the invaluable service that nurses make in healthcare. So, the members undertook the refurbishing of two of Sound Shore Medical Center’s nurses lounges – a special way of saying “thank you”.

While transforming the Fourth and Fifth Floor Nurses’ Lounges took co-chairs, Duran Radulovic and Elizabeth Fitts only an afternoon to complete, the planning, design and creation took months to accomplish. The JLWOS Committee decided on two possible facelifts. Then they created design boards for each and presented them to SSMC for their input. When the design choice was made, then the work began in earnest. Ms. Radulovic designed a work station that would be at the heart of the facelift. But she needed help with the execution of her design. So she enlisted the talents of her father-in-law, Branko Radulovic, who - with his woodworking skills - turned concept into reality.

The Nurses’ Lounges now have custom-made work stations to house new microwaves and coffee makers plus plenty of space for supplies. For seating, there are custom-made benches with storage, and the new chairs and couch have decorative throw pillows that match the hand-made window valences.

Commenting on the Health Initiative Committee’s efforts, Duran Radulovic said, “The Sound Shore Medical Center staff works hard helping others every day. It feels good to do something for them that makes their break environment a little more comfortable and relaxing.”

President and CEO John R. Spicer said, “We are fortunate to have the Junior League supporting their community hospital in such a meaningful way. Not only are they active in our fundraising events, but they are sharing their talents and caring with our staff.” He concluded, “We are grateful for their efforts on our behalf.”
